I went camping this past weekend up at Stokes state forest and did about 20 miles of hiking between the two days. My new timberland boots are awesome and the weather was perfect. I thoroughly enjoyed using every bit of space possible in packing my miata. Trunk was filled with wood splitter, shovel, pillow, sleeping bag, chair, and some food (along with my usual car tools). Then the passenger seat has a big cooler full of the real food (meat!) and the trunk rack has a suitcase packed with tent, cooking supplies, and clothes for the weekend. I will definitely say that a Miata is the best way to enjoy a camping trip... if you aren’t bringing a passenger lol. I could probably pack better and fit two people’s stuff but it would be much more challenging to fit a cooler. Anyways, below is a photo dump of my great weekend.
Feast of epic proportions! Not really, just some hobo stew, beans, and a hot dog. That hobo stew cooked for over an hour so it came out great. Nice mix of ground beef, veggies, canned tomato, and beef broth.
What an amazing thing to find on the Appalachian trail that I hiked about 10 miles of. The log book inside the shelter was my favorite part! I hope to hike more of the AT some day.
Sunrise mountain was cool and worth the hike up for sure! I even saw a rattlesnake on my way down. Freaked the shit out of me because I discovered it was there due to the loud rattling which prompted me to immediately run the fuck in the other direction. But it eventually moved and I moved on thankfully not dead.
Sick waterfall!
I love waking up in my tent in the morning when camping.
My fire skills are improving! The very dry wood definitely helped matters though.
Great great trip and I will surely be back. Not nearly as cheap as Virginia camping but a ton closer. I think it was under two hours from home so I'll be back up that way soon enough for sure. Adventure is out there!

They have a sign that says No Fire and you light a fire?

Haha my camp was like 6 miles from there so I think I was good. I was just visiting that shelter. Although it had a fire ring right in front of the shelter with obvious previous fire remains in it..

Sunrise Mountain in Hot Springs?
I completely agree that the Miata is an ideal camping vehicle... in the same way that a speedo is the ideal swimwear for men. Kidding, but the Miata is basically like a motorcycle. I went camping for a couple days (around Asheville) with a passenger in my NA (i.e.: spare tire in trunk) and I was able to fit necessities and nothing more.

Not sure where hot springs is. Sunrise mountain in Stokes State Forest, NJ. Branchville is the nearest town? I definitely want to do some camping down near Asheville this summer! I drove BRP from Asheville to Roanoke and I definitely want to do it again but with more camping and hiking along the way. How is your miata so clean while camping??

Hot Springs is north of Asheville. I looked up Sunrise Mountain and that’s what came up lol. I live in Asheville now and am looking to do a good amount of camping/hiking/driving in the mountains this summer for sure! Oh and looks are deceiving with the low light and the Starlight Blue Mica paint... it wasn’t all that clean!

Yeah my miata was just so friggin dirty haha. The pollen already turned it green but the camping added another layer of dirt and such. Finally cleaned it today after work so I am much happier now lol.

I hear ya. I washed my car last week, went to Cincy for the weekend (drove a rental fiesta), and when I came back it was already covered with pollen. I do not like pollen very much at all.

Yup my car was green in the morning again. Better than before though so that's all that matters I suppose.

I wish I had a garage... That would be so convenient! Maybe the rain will wash some of the pollen away in a couple days.

We surely do need the rain!
